Swinging from a Tree

And so they swung from a tree, the breeze caressing their ankles.
The sun set in the distance and the night kissed the sky, saying goodbye to the warm rays.
With a sadness the day left them, the joys becoming a memory.
With a quiet trepidation, they watched as stars glittered the darkness and the cool air gave them new sensations.
All the while they swung from a tree. The memories still close and the tomorrow even nearer.
And when they swung from the great tree, the river teasing their toes, they decided that tomorrow was not enough and only should they have their memories.
And so they swung from the tree – and hung from the tree.

Slenderman Obsessions

Call me crazy but I can’t get Slenderman out of my mind. No, I’m not killing anyone anytime soon – well at least not in real life. Last year at Phoenix Comicon, which has no shortage of cosplay, I was sitting there minding my own business and selling/signing my books like any good author would do when Slenderman walked by. Sure, he was a cosplayer – at least I thought he was – but it’s what happened next that started my fascination with the creeptastic creepypasta legend. In the middle of Phoenix Comicon where you can barely hear yourself thing and where Slenderman (the cosplayer) was a good 30 feet from me, I whispered to my friend next to me “Hey, that’s Slenderman.” and he turned around and looked at me where I caught a photo that has since mysteriously disappeared.

Ok – so he’s just a cosplayer. But it was creepy. Probably a coincidence but creepy regardless. And I was interested in this phenomena before. But add to that the stories of teenagers stabbing their friends in the name of Slenderman and the disturbing factor quickly rises.

Here’s what Wikipedia says :

The Slender Man (also known as Slenderman) is a fictional supernatural character that originated as a creepypasta Internet meme created by Something Awful forums user Eric Knudsen (also known as “Victor Surge”) in 2009. It is depicted as resembling a thin, unnaturally tall man with a blank and usually featureless face, wearing a black suit.

Stories of the Slender Man commonly feature him stalking, abducting or traumatizing people, particularly children.[1] The Slender Man is not confined to a single narrative, but appears in many disparate works of fiction, typically composed online.[2] Fiction relating to the Slender Man encompasses many media, including literature, art and video series such as Marble Hornets. Outside of online fiction, the Slender Man has had impact on popular culture, having been referenced in the video game Minecraft and generated video games of his own, such as Slender: The Eight Pages and Slender: The Arrival.

Beginning in 2014, a minor moral panic occurred over the Slender Man after readers of his fiction were connected to several violent acts, particularly a near-fatal stabbing of a 12-year-old girl in Waukesha, Wisconsin.

The Slender Man stabbing occurred on Saturday, May 31, 2014, in Waukesha, Wisconsin, a suburb of Milwaukee, when two 12-year-old girls allegedly lured another girl of the same age into the woods and stabbed her 19 times, purportedly in order to impress the fictional character Slender Man. After being stabbed, the victim crawled to a road and lay on a sidewalk where a cyclist found her and called 9-1-1. She was rushed to a hospital, at which point she was “one millimeter away from certain death,” according to a criminal complaint.[2] The victim was hospitalized for six days and has since recovered and returned to school.

What is Slenderman? Just a weird creepypasta urban legend gone viral? Or have we manifested more than just an internet creation?

Dyatlov Pass – Strange Happenings

Source: RT

The travelers began their journey on January 1 trekking along one of the most difficult paths starting from North Ural to the town of Ivdel, according to the emergency services.

The site where body was reportedly located is infamous for the tragic and mysterious deaths of nine hikers in 1959. The causes of their deaths are still unknown while the case is surrounded with controversy.

The Dyatlov pass was named after the leader of the hiking group that went missing, Igor Dyatlov. The group consisted of graduate students from of the Ural Polytechnic Institute. Their plan was to trek 350 kilometers on skis through the forests and Northern Urals to Mount Otorten (which is translated from the local Mansi language as ‘Don’t go There’). Initially there were 10 people in the group, but one of the hikers fell ill and was forced to abandon the venture.

On February 12, 1959 the nine failed to report to the scheduled end-point at a village called Vizhay. As a result of rescue efforts, the group’s tent was found on the slope of the Mount Kholat Syakhl (“Mountain of the Dead” in Mansi) on February 26. Investigators later determined that tent had been was cut with a sharp object from the inside.

The skiers also left all their belongings in the tent while apparently trying to urgently flee the campsite. After following footprints down the hill for about 1.5 km – some of those fleeing were wearing only socks, some were even barefoot – the search party found five bodies.

Some of the hikers were wearing only underwear and their bodies showed signs of struggle such as fractured skulls and broken ribs. One of the women had her tongue missing. The search for the remaining four travelers who were located further into the woods took more than two months.

The Soviet criminal investigation in 1959 failed to establish the causes of the incident. The final report said that an unknown compelling force killed the people.

The incident which remains one of the most chilling unsolved mysteries of the 20th century sparked many theories in which investigators attempted to rebuild the chronology of events. The numerous explanations put forward included an avalanche, military tests seen by the hikers that the government was trying to hide, a hostile encounter with an unknown creature, or paranormal activity.

dyatlov-pass-incident1

The mystery of the Dyatlov Pass incident has inspired filmmakers to make a science fiction horror movie entitled ‘Devil’s Pass’ where five students investigate the incident.

Strange occurrences from the Dyatlov Pass incident:

One hiker was found with her tongue ripped out. Blood found in the stomach indicates this happened while she was alive and not the result of being frozen.

One hiker was found with 5 broken ribs

Another hiker was found with a crushed skull

Two hikers, who died of hypothermia, were found near their campsite out of cover from the forest. Experienced hikers will build their camp/fire within the protection of the tress.

Recently, in January of this year – another hiker was found dead in the same area.

Mysterious Voicemail – Case of the Missing

If you’ve read Clusters: Case of the Missing, then you know I’ve been following David Paulides’ research on mysterious disappearance cases.

Here’s a recent voicemail that’s boggling everyone’s mind.

What are your thoughts?

Here’s an article on his disappearance

Location for New CLUSTERS Book Announcement

I’m leaving the country.

Ok, I’m not – but Charlie (Charles) Sutton is.

True to Clusters, it’ll be based on true cases and this time inspired by the 61 deaths at Manchester Canal Street in England.

And true to Clusters, the inspiration from Paulides is still there. As his investigations continue, the strangeness grows.

If you think you knew where Clusters was going, then you’re in for a new surprise because there are new patterns and new ideas behind the cases of the missing.

We’re not out of the woods yet… or maybe we are.

What’s different in this book?

Like Clusters: Case of the Missing – This book will be able to stand alone. However, we’re going to be moving into urban areas now as cases of the missing is no longer contained in our national forests.
In a way, this will hit a lot closer to home for many of us.

When will it be released? We’re looking at the end of 2016 at the earliest.

Will we see some of the same characters? The Sheriff will have a cameo, but this one follows Charles, who we met in Clusters: Case of the Missing.

Do we have a title? There’s a working title, either CLUSTERS: Nephesh or Clusters: Canal Street. What do you guys think?

Will there be more books? I have no idea. When I started out with Clusters: Case of the Missing, it was supposed to be one and done. The story will be done when it tells me it’s done.

Kenny Veach – The Mysterious Missing Cave on YouTube

David Paulides shared about the cave video on Coast to Coast AM (July 20th, 2015) where Kenny Veach is looking for this cave and has been missing since. I encourage you to listen to the Paulides interview if you haven’t. I’ve read every single one of his Missing 411 books as research for my book, CLUSTERS, and even the books he recommended. To this day, I’m baffled. I am so happy Paulides has dedicated so much to helping the missing and their families.

A little background – Veach is searching for a cave he apparently had encountered on a hike previously that had left him feeling creeped out. When you watch the video you’ll see he’s a really level headed guy and has his own theory as to what creeped him out.

ViralNova covered some info on his disappearance including some screen prints of his comments. I recommend watching the video first before reading the article here.

You’ll see in the comments, Veach’s girlfriend comments:  Sheryon Pilgrim 7 months ago I didn’t realize until today that there were comments on this hiking video. I am Kenny’s girlfriend that he mentioned in the video. We went on many many wonderful hikes together in our Nevada desert. Many of the hikes were 8 or 9 hrs long and we always took beautiful pictures. Kenny left for an over night hike in this same area on Monday Nov 10th. Today is Dec 10th. He did not return when he was supposed to and I called missing persons. They have been searching for him and have not found him. I did not want to leave his wonderful video and this site just hanging and having you wonder why he has not responded. jameslacey01…..Thank you for suggesting the GPS. I talked with him before about using GPS for safety reasons. He just never seam to want to use one. He loved just being out in the desert and just finding his own way. I am aching with missing his physical presence. Please encourage all the solo hikers you know to use a GPS

Miwa Yanagi – Highlighting a Dark Japanese Artist and her Own Twisted Fairy Tales

You all know by now my love for twisted fairy tales. While I like to use my own medium, (words) I’m always on the lookout for artists of all mediums and one specifically stood out for me: Miwa Yanagi

You have to admire the Japanese and their true mastery of horror. I was first turned onto Japanese horror films the same way a lot of other people were; The Grudge. However, compared to what’s out there – The Grudge seems like a walk in the park. (one very well lit, in the middle of the day, with lots of people type of parks.

So, here are some of the works of Miwa Yanagi and her own Twisted Fairy Tale series.

Ask the Author Q&A

I posted on Facebook and Twitter, giving aspiring authors and writers the chance to ask me any question. I got some great ones, so here we go! P.S. If you still would like to ask a question, feel free to post it in the comments.

tumblr_n8vc9nc2PE1ttjwiao1_400

Jennifer asks : I would love to become an author. So many inspire me (with) the stories they write, how do you come up with a story line and follow with it? When I write it seems like my writing goes all over the place. I guess my question is how do you maintain & create a story line?

Great question Jennifer! Sometimes you just have to trust the story that’s unfolding. I think a lot of authors started writing a story one way and it ended up being completely different. When I started writing Bohemian Grove it was supposed to be an inspirational story for business women. Next thing I know I’m writing science-fiction. I think that’s quite the turn! But, itworked out for the best and started a new life for me, literally. Trust the process and listen to your characters. Also, having a great beta reader helps. If I’m not feeling right about the direction I’m heading I rely on my editor and beta reader to let me know whether it’s just me over thinking it or if I really do need to make adjustments. You don’t need to be an author to have the right team of people. Find a friend who loves to write or join the water cooler writers group for feedback.

Matthew asks: What have you found to be your most successful outlet for building your community and/or fan base?

I’m glad you asked this Matthew! The most successful outlet is the one you most enjoy being a part of. If you hate Twitter, there’s no point in building via Twitter. The same goes for Facebook, Instagram, etc. Find one you’re attracted to naturally and build there. Facebook and Twitter have been kindest to me as far as social media. But I definitely take advantage of Amazon, Goodreads, and live events.  The most important thing any author or aspiring author can do is network. Not only with their peers, but with their readers. Build your fan base one person at a time and just remember that your readers, in a way, are more important than you are. Treat them with the respect they deserve and you’ll get it back times 10.

tumblr_n97aoos9Qk1s0xjvpo1_500

Johna asks: How hard was writing your first book?

My first book, strangely, was the easiest one for me to write. I didn’t have any expectations with it and honestly wasn’t even going to do anything with it. I was writing it 100% for myself. I also had an amazing person who was reading the story as I wrote it and excited about it unfolding, so that definitely helped motivate me to keep going! After that, I had people relying on me and expecting me to do well. So, the pressure was on. It no longer became about myself but my publishers, editors, readers, fan base, friends, etc — I still write mostly for myself, as in I won’t write a story unless it’s one I want to write, but with each book that comes out, the bar is raised. I also have deadlines now, which makes it more challenging.  Does this mean the first book is easiest for everyone? Probably not. I tend to do things backwards.

Edward asks: Focus, is my issue, it comes and goes….some days I can write all day, others an hour before distraction sets in… Thoughts?

Welcome to life Edward! Every writer struggles with this. We’re being pulled in a million different directions at all times. Most authors also don’t write full-time. I really don’t think anyone is as focused as they truly want to be. We never get as many words as we want done on a daily basis because… well because life happens. That’s why you often see writers going on writer retreats and escaping day-to-day activities to find their focus. You do your best.  Make a schedule and try your best to stick with it. It won’t always happen but this is what works best for me. If I make a schedule and set aside 2 hours every day to write then I know when those 2 hours comes I need to write. I put my headphones on, find the right music and ignore the distractions without guilt, because that’s the time I set aside. Does that mean it always happens that way? Absolutely not, but you’ve definitely got to push yourself.

Mimi asks: I have people tell me all the time that I should write a book but I fear it would be rejected and I’d be embarrassed. How do you get past that?

First Mimi, I wouldn’t recommend writing a book because your friends tell you you should. Is there one book that you want to write because there’s one story that needs to be told? It still needs to be something you’re driven to do yourself. Do you just want the story out but don’t want the rejection or want to write it? Maybe look into having someone else write the story for you and you can partner up with them.  As far as rejection goes. No one likes rejection. No one. This is something you need to be prepared for because it doesn’t matter how amazing of a story you write, someone isn’t going to like it. And that someone is most likely going to be very vocal about it. I also don’t recommend jumping right into writing a book. Join a writer’s group and start writing short stories. Get feedback and get used to getting the feedback. If you find that the feedback is debilitating then you have your answer on if this is something you should do. Also, you can still write a story for yourself, without putting it out in the public. I know plenty of people who do this. They write because they just want to get a story out but they don’t let anyone except those they love and trust read it – there’s nothing wrong with this.  Are you friends telling you to write a book because they think you’re a good writer? I still suggest joining a writer’s group if this is what you want to do in your life. Being told you should be a writer by friends who enjoy reading your work is an entirely different ball game than actually writing, completing, editing, and publishing a book. A writer’s group and writer’s workshop is a great way to transition from one world to another and see if it’s something you really want to do.  3CFbK Have more questions? Black Eyed Children

3d67ec09615818a08a31ce0ebae13ffd

Black-Eyed Children sightings Began in 1988, now there have been over a thousand sightings and encounters all around the world. They’ve been seen knocking on doors and tapping on windows, asking to be let in or use the phone. It appears that they can’t enter your house unless you give them permission… So don’t let them in!

tumblr_n01bop0va11t4o62mo1_250Ok… seriously? I can’t write crap this scary. Thought Catalog is a radio show that had some callers post their stories – here’s one of them.

I had my one and only encounter with a black eyed kid. Before my experience i had never heard of anything having to do with the black eyed kids. I was 12. I was sitting outside of a hairdressers in a old Chevy pickup waiting for my mom to get her hair cut. About 15 minutes had passed and I saw some kid walking back and forth along the sidewalk in front of my parked car. At first I thought I recognized him as one of my friends from school so i banged on the front windshield until he looked my way. It was not anyone i knew. At this point I was not scared at all. Not yet. The boy walked over to the side of my care and just stares. I think to let me get a good look at his eyes. To freak me out. Let me tell you.. If you have never seen a black eyed kid.. you have no idea what to imagine. Pupils black as the night sky. The boy whispers “You must let me in” and then i locked the car doors and ducked down into the space below the seats. Five minutes later he was gone. When my mother got into the car she told me a boy with black eyes had came into the hairdressers had insisted for my mother to give him the keys to the car. She refused……thank God she did.

Um… WHAT?! This scares me. I’m not even kidding.

Here’s another one that really set me on edge. I apologize ahead of time for putting this story in your head. But hey… you’re my readers and well.. here it goes:

Last night was like any other night, I was switching between listening to music and watching youtube videos with one headphone in so I can hear my infant daughter if she cries, that way my wife can get a full nights sleep (she works at 4am at the hospital every day). When I decide to go lay down in the spare bed in the babies room..

Just as I dosed off I heard a thumping coming from the front porch, startled at first I open my eyes wide and scan the room. Realizing it was most likely my cat scratching himself on the front porch I dose back off. Then again, the thumping. “Damn cat” I got out of bed to run him off the porch only to see he wasn’t there any more, now that I was up again I wasn’t the least bit tired. I figured I’ll just get some tea and check Facebook while I’m up, maybe finish the web series I was watching on youtube..

a few minutes into the video I felt the sudden urge to look up at the kitchen window, there they were..

the tops of two short statured peoples heads cresting the stairs just above my window frame. The people were just short enough to not see in the window but I could see out. I heard no footsteps on my porch as my stomach turned.. but the knock, the knock was a steady hollow thump. The very same thump I had just blamed on my cat. Deciding it was best not to answer I shut my laptop and crept by the door back to the babies room..

I assumed it was some of the people from the low income housing across the road from me that were high or hiding from the cops or maybe looking for my cousin who stays with me often and has many friends over there. The last thing I needed was to try to explain to two stoners that I was trying to sleep even though it was 2am.

It wasn’t until I got to my daughters room that the creepiness set in. The thump had moved from the kitchen to the bedroom windows.. both windows, a room apart thumping in perfect time. These stoners were going to wake up my daughter if I didn’t run them off now. Pissed off I went out to the kitchen, unlocked and opened the door ready to run around to the side of the house and kick some little idiots ass.

It happened then, standing there looking up at me were two 10 or 11 year old boys. The feeling of dread and the smell of mold almost made me vomit.. the smaller of the two then spoke “May we use your telegraph?” Huh? I just stared blankly at these boys, horrified of what I then realized.. their eyes were pitch black. He asked again to use my “telegraph”.

There wasn’t a sound to be heard no crickets chirping, no dogs barking, no cars driving by.. nothing. I tried to play it cool and ignore the fact that he didn’t say telephone, or phone, or cell.. anything that would have made any sense of the situation and calmly replied “I don’t have service at my house sorry.” The expressions on their faces turned to rage as I finished my sentence. Swiftly I shut the door and locked it as quickly as I could, then stumbled back to protect my daughter. I picked her up from her crib and held her close, the fact that she didn’t wake up freaked me out the most but I managed to gather my senses enough to make sure she was still breathing and warm.. everything seemed okay with her.

The thumping on the windows was back, I dropped to the floor as close to the wall as I could and held my little girl in my arms and wept like a child.. I felt helpless and afraid. I lied there for what felt like hours and hours crying and shaking until I heard it, my wifes alarm clock. The thumping stopped the instant the alarm went off and I crept into the master bedroom with the baby. “Whats wrong with you?” My wife asked… “I just had a bad dream” Is all I could mutter out. “okay well give me the baby so I can feed her before work.” I handed my wife the baby and she fed her like any normal day.. I turned on every light in the house and made coffee for her. For some reason just having her awake calmed my nerves enough to pretend like nothing happened.. I walked her out to the car nervously with the baby in my arms.. I asked her not to leave until I walked back in the house. She was put off by the request but did so to humor me. Once I was safely in the house I locked the door again.. and in the house I sat horrified until she got home. I insisted we go to the next town over and stay the weekend at my brothers house… and here I sit horrified while she sleeps in the guest room with my daughter. Wondering why they stopped when the alarm went off.. I think I know the answer. I was aware of BEKs she wasn’t. Every story I’ve read about them is from someone who already knew about them. Maybe, Just maybe knowledge of them existing is the only reason they visit..

I’m afraid and I’m sorry.

tumblr_n02zytVu0Q1t4o62mo1_500

According to Creepypasta Wiki (yes, that’s a real site) this is the story on BEK.

Black-Eyed People (sometimes called Black Eyed Children or Bek) are young people, often children, with eyes that are solid black with no differentiation between sclera, pupil, or iris, and are occasionally reported to have blue or bluish tinted skin like that of a corpse. Those who report encounters with them often feel that the children were somehow supernatural and extremely dangerous though they could not explain why.

Often they can be seen playing games and singing the nursery songs “old man long legs” or “he jumped into a bramble bush” in abandoned, or near deserted areas, sometimes the reports talk of them appearing at ones doorstep usually alone or in a pair. They appear to be unusually confident yet shy children who avoid your gaze and look down hiding their eyes, but speaking with an eloquency far beyond their apparent age. Often using the mannerisms and speech patterns of an adult, they occasionally possess the voice of an adult. They will usually attempt to talk the victim into allowing them entry into their home to use a telephone or to be safe from some unspecified danger. Occasionally when seen outside the home they will immediately stop their play and stare at you, or if possible approach you asking for a place to stay or trying to talk you into giving them a ride home. Often, people begin to agree to their requests against their better judgement, even though the request will seem vaguely unsettling, without realizing why it is. Should you discover that their eyes are completely black, the children become very angry and insistent on you complying with their demands. Some people who have encountered Bek feel that the children may have been using some form of low-level mind control to get them to comply.

Experiences involving the Bek generally do not explain the cause of the children’s eye color or the origins of the children themselves. Sometimes thought to be the spirits of lost or murdered children the Bek are thought to be harbingers of ill will and personal doom. The encounters frequently emphasize that the children must be voluntarily admitted or invited into the house or car in question, and in this way are reminiscent of some vampire legends. However it is unspecified what happens should you comply with their demands as no reports of the Bek have included that happening, possibly indicating the death of those that comply.

So… question – have you guys had any encounters with BEK or no one who has? Post them in the comments.

so what do you think? Urban Legend? Something more? Let me know!
